“Afoot and light-hearted, I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose.”
What Is Spiritual Life Coaching?
Spiritual Life Coaching and spiritual traditions throughout the world celebrate the hero’s journey home.
And the hero’s return symbolizes a return to wholeness, prosperity, creativity, ease, fulfillment, and rest.
Our Spiritual Life Coaching program is a path back to yourself.
And on this path, you will contemplate what you truly want so that you can make powerful choices about your life.
Who Can Benefit From Spiritual Life Coaching?
Do you ask questions like: “Where am I?” “What is my purpose?” “Am I meant to be more?”
If the answer is yes, then you’ll benefit from working with a Spiritual Life Coach.
Successful people live by principles. And principles are shaped over a lifetime of development and introspection.
You will usually seek out a Spiritual Coach when a life transition forces you to clarify the principles—or values—by which you live.
If you are on this journey, then you already know it’s important to develop three essential qualities:
- A higher purpose: You value values.
- Conviction: You stand up to forces that want to pull you off your path.
- Surplus: You have the chance, time, money, and ability to cultivate your passion and to bring something meaningful into the world.
It’s easy to lose sight of who you are—especially when different needs pull you in conflicting directions.
Our clients are people like you—passionate about achieving their dreams.
You will benefit from Spiritual Life Coaching if you are inspired by an idea. Perhaps you want to move to another country or start your own business. Or, perhaps you want to build a community or build a retreat center. Maybe you want help taking your next big step.
Spiritual Coaching clients are creative people. They are entrepreneurs starting new businesses or outliers prototyping a side-hustle. They’re usually passionate, innovative, and deep-thinking. They might want help with personal goals like writing a book or deepening spiritual practice.
What Are You Looking For?
Not everyone knows what they’re seeking. People don’t always know what they want when they look for a coach. They might feel acute dissatisfaction, like with a job. Or, they might feel vaguely out of sorts — like something is missing in life.
Tied up with work, errands, family, and social engagements, it’s easy to burnout. And in burnout mode, you don’t take the time to reflect on your life—much less do anything to change it.
So, you forget your purpose.
You tell yourself that what you want doesn’t matter. You think of your dreams as ‘Cheesy’ or ‘Woo Woo.’
So, your spirit withers. And, without knowing why, you lose your passion. Your creativity dries up. And you grumble without taking action.
Consequently, life becomes flat and boring — punctuated here and there with a few shallow hits of excitement from a restaurant or a movie that leaves you wanting more.
If you’re lucky, you question yourself. And you realize that you need a change. But you aren’t clear about what to do. So, you begin to reflect.
You’ve ‘checked all the boxes. But something feels ‘off’: Maybe you don’t have enough time for what you love. Or maybe you don’t act on what you know you want to do because you’re too afraid to fail.
But life – handled wisely and with compassion – is full of opportunity.
And if you’re reading this, you’re already on a new path. You just have to keep going.
What is Spiritual Life?
Because to act on your impulse to grow is the beginning of spiritual life. And acting to find true happiness is a time-honored choice.
The choice to live a spiritual life is a powerful, courageous, and exciting alternative to the frustration and dis-ease of unsettling, nervous-making technology, and the social hyper-complexity of modern culture.
Learning to reclaim and nurture what is best in you — what is most intelligent and human — Spiritual Coaching allows you to recover the purity, simplicity, and health of a cultivated mind.
Working with a Spiritual Coach will help you re-calibrate so that you can start over. Recover.
You will learn how to balance your spiritual needs with your worldly obligations. This balance will allow you to thrive. You’ll also continue to nurture rich and meaningful human relationships to stay grounded, genuine, and self-aware.
Live. Create with purpose. Act with energy. Communicate with confidence. And beat your self-doubt.
How I Can Help
Over the past 10 years, I have helped individuals improve their relationships, have children, change careers, develop business programs, and align their lives with exciting, altruistic values.
I’ve also helped independent professionals start their own businesses.
But perhaps most importantly I teach by example.
I have realized my own vision of the Good: writing and publishing essays on Buddhism, life, poetry, and art, while studying Buddhism, living in NYC, building a hermitage in the mountains of North Carolina, and resuscitating a temple for Buddhist study and practice in Kyoto, Japan.
If you want to establish a genuinely creative, spiritual life but need a little guidance, mentoring, encouragement, support, and help, take advantage of an invaluable opportunity to set up your own Turning the Lights On session.
Explore your situation, and see if I’m a good fit for you.
“[Soken’s] carefully tailored program has given me enormous insight and I am a better person, mother and leader as a result. Soken has a calming, peaceful and reassuring presence, and I am extremely grateful to have met him when I did.”

What Does the Spiritual Life Coaching Program Look Like?
Through a combination of research-based coaching protocols, contemplative practices, and spiritual mentoring you’ll reflect and take action toward realizing an engaging life.
Practices might include one-on-one mentoring around meditation. Or we might have an open-ended discussion that clarifies what you’re thinking, what’s important to you, what you value in life, and what actions make sense for you to take right now.
We might also design a regimen for a private spiritual retreat based on philosophy, literature, and spiritual texts from various traditions. These kinds of retreats highlight your interests and sense of purpose. Also, we’ll begin to see what your life might look like if it were based on what you most value.
Contemplative practices will aid your ability to reflect and think more deeply about your life.
Spiritual instruction in a tutorial format will provide a way for you to maintain and deepen spiritual practice.
Coaching conversations provide you with insight, accountability, and support that open up what it takes to grow and improve—and how to let go of unnecessary mental clutter.
The program is a fun and exciting process; however, it does require a commitment to your personal growth.
Together, we’ll take a look at what kind of study arrangements make sense for you. Because even if you feel like spiritual study is an impossible task, there is always a way to take the next step.
The practices and conversations in this program are all designed to deepen your sensitivity and develop self-awareness. Consequently, you’ll begin to heal and purify your mind. And you’ll see things as they are. Thus, you’ll develop the skill and confidence to act warmly and compassionately, in agreement with what actually is.
In this way, the world opens up for you, nourished by love and truth: two essential ingredients for stability and peace of mind.
How Does It Work?
We’ll work together through phone or video-internet sessions, assigned readings, writing exercises, discussion, and contemplative practice all aimed at the study and exploration of yourself, the world, and different approaches to life until you find an approach that suits you.
And through this process, you’ll learn how to balance worldly success with the richness, meaning, and purpose of a well-lived human life.
You’ll start with a free 90-minute Turning the Lights On consultation to figure out where you are. Then, based on the interview, we’ll determine the best approach.
For most people, we start with a three-month introductory series which includes six one-on-one sessions via video conference or phone—if you prefer—scheduled every other week, with a bi-weekly accountability check-in.
Once you’ve scheduled your Turning the Lights On consultation appointment, you’ll receive a short questionnaire to complete to help guide our discussion. Depending on your answers, I might send you a short reading to consider.
Then, on the call, we’ll discuss your answers to the questionnaire, especially what you hope to achieve, what you see as getting in the way, what your blockages might be, and how you might clear them.
Also, we’ll look at your current attitudes, mindsets, approaches to life, and whether or not they’re serving you as well as you’d like.
Even this initial discussion has changed the course of people’s lives.
Here is something to keep in mind in this consultation and with this whole process:
When you are choosing a Spiritual Coach, teacher, or guide, the two most important considerations are (1) the content of your advisor’s words and (2) the suitability of your advisor’s style with yours.
So, when we meet—or when you have any kind of spiritual interview for that matter—pay attention to how you feel. Are you interested and excited? Do you feel an affinity for what’s being said? Can you relate? Are you inspired to take action? Do you experience comfort, excitement, or enthusiasm?
